Assemblages

Although clearly influenced by the work of Joseph Cornell
and Louise Nevelson, Fred's box or drawer assemblages are distinctive
expressions of his creativity and eye for color and design. They are versatile
pieces of art and look as fine standing on a table or counter as they
do hanging from a wall. Study them close-up, and you may suspect that
some have themes. For instance, one contains several rusty objects,
shades of blue, and fishing lures. In another, religious
iconography from a variety of faiths appears occasionally
amidst items that are more commonplace.

This is not to suggest, however, that the boxes are
intended from the start to illustrate a theme. "I select the items
and play with their placement," Fred says, "but I do not sketch out
the piece or begin with a title and attempt to locate objects that fit that title."

Because of their depth (an average of five inches)
and the glass that encases each box, assemblages do not photograph
particularly well. The artist's recommendation is that you
"visit the studio - by appointment or during the upcoming
East of Asheville Studio Tour to view the assemblages in person."
